Mud Wreslting in SanBar

It's time to get some Mud in your shirt. Mud Wrestling is an event done by Sanbar held there Mud Wrestling to show who has the coolness to wrestle in mud. You can get chance to try it each time this event takes place. On Friday August 16,2013 it was a great match to see and a match you didn't wanted to miss. It was funtastic time to see all the contestant participating in this contest. Everyone joined the dance floor when their favourite music came on. The winner's got great prizes. the Music was provide by DJ DZL he performes his best music mix. Don't forget when this event takes place we have $4 rum, $7 Tequila shot, and $1 wings and if you want a free rum punch all you got to do is get some mud in you and wrestle with someone.So when you here Mud Wrestling in Sanbar all you got say "are you ready to get some mud in you?" September celebration 2013

Every year in in September 10 St. George's Caye day and 21st Independence day is our remembered holiday to be respected and remembered. It is a national Bank holiday in Belize and we celebrate this month as our honored month. In Belize in Sepetember is celebrates the largest celebration in the country. People come out to watch the Road March as it is popular; people  dance and dress in masquerade through the streets of Corozal, Orange Walk town, and Belize City. This Carnival is like any other popular carnival in the Caribbean.This carnival gives you a feedback to learn and pass on the tradition. for example, in some district they present their culture costume like Mestizo in Orange Walk. As this two holiday 10 St george's Caye day represents the BAttle of St george's Caye and the 21st September reperents our 1981 independence.

Less than three weeks away Belize's unique carnival is a well experience carnival to see. It is a time of year that celebrates our history, our culture, our people, our nation. This fun event started with only a few people in mind In 1975 Ms. Crystal, Ms. June, Ms. Alice, Ms. Maude and Ms. Myrtle join a sunday and went to the streets to celebrate. It only took a matter of time and little costume to show. But one day they didn't realize that all five of their name spelt CJAMM. Which now today is call what carnival is. Now all what people have behind their minds it party time. Now today people from all ages participate in this event. 

Belize and happy faces everyone brings Carnival in Belize is just fun moment to celebrated each year. This year competion will be held as Carnival King & Queen Competition on September 7th, 2013 at the MCC Grounds in Belize City. In the month of September popular songs of Soca, Punta, and much more.  Every year in belize are asked to present a theme of Belize and come up with an idea about how Belize could change or can be written abut the people or developement in Belize. This was voted on the best theme Called ''Belize in you, Belize in me, Land of the free.'' This  them was choosen, because it talks a great change about what Belizeans can do for a living a how Belize can change for a better communkity. Timothy Callanan went missing since Tuesday

Since Tuesday morning a business man from San Pedro Timothy James Callanan was pronunced missing in San pedro. He went to Belize for his appointment and last seen Burd Bradly and never been seen again, including Senior Counsel Dean Lindo went for a hunt for him. He went to check in to a hotel on Golden Tree at around midday on Tuesday. He was suppose to stay only one night in Belize City. But sadly, bad news, Between the hours of five and six in the evening on Wednesday the receptionist decide to clean the room where he was staying, since he didn't showup  to check out of his. Surprsingly, she found his body lying facing the bed. She suddenly called for police, to retrieve his body and suicide notes in his room was found. His body was sent at the K.H.M.H for a post-merten. All they can say is for now that it is Suicide. San Pedro residence are shock to here this stricking news and are giving all his best condolences. He was a well known entreprenuership in the San Pedro and a friendly person in the island.

Is fast food really healthy for people?

All the recent discussion about fast-food employment, wages and benefits has a lot of Americans asking one collective question: Who cares? Well, you do. According to Gallup, 80% of you eat fast food at least once a month.

There's very little disparity in how all of that grease-fried food is consumed, either. Often associated with low income or poverty, fast food is consumed more heavily by those making more than $75,000 a year (51% report eating it at least once a week) than by those making between $20,000 and $30,000 a year (42%) or less than $20,000 (39%).

It's clearly a young person's game, however, as 57% of those aged 18 to 29 say they hit the counter or drive-through at least once a week. That drops to 47% for those aged 30 to 49, 44% for those aged 50 to 64 and to 41% among those aged 65 and older.

here isn't a whole lot of difference between how various races visit McDonald's (MCD), Burger King (BKW), Wendy's (WEN) and elsewhere, either. Fifty-two percent of blacks and 53% of Hispanics eat fast food at least weekly, while 46% of whites do the same.

All the groups feel just as badly about their meal afterward. A full 73% of those who go for fast food weekly told Gallup they think it's not too good for them or not good at all. That still trails the 81% of people who don't eat fast-food who believe the same. But at least there's a sizable degree of self-awareness.

So how healthy is fast food? Researchers and health professionals have long been aware of the consequences associated with eating fast food. After eatinga 12-hour fast and again two and four hours after finishing each meal. The results were not pretty!  The researchers collected their data by measuring the men’s endothelial function -- the ability of the blood vessels to dilatethe men’s arteries dilated 24 percent less than when the subjects were in a fasted state. Poor endothelial function is a significant precursor of atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries that can block. Here is the food list given to the men's:  fast food sausage, egg and cheese sandwich.

Fast food is pre-packed food that has been around since the early 1900's. But, looking at the health today it is putting at people's risk like obisity, Diabetes un-wanted fat. “nutritional value” is an oxymoron that doesn't have much nutrition. In the fact that this kind of food does not feed your body giving you sufficient energy to move around.  Fast food products are made with highly-processed ingredients to give it shelf-life, as seeing food from scratch it nurish the body as denatural food it lacks any nutrtional vitamins.

Why they say fast food is fatting? fast food, damage your body’s cells that includes Synthetic chemicals. Which this type of food can cause to an adict food. The cause of adict aspartame and MSG (monosodium glutamate) causes the body to gain weight and disease issues. Wake up people and you need to realize how serious this food are. Fast-food chicken breast can contain everything from modified corn starch to hydrolyzed corn gluten. What do farmer use it for? 60% of corn startch are use to fatten a cattle.

Is their such thing as good fast food? 1,829 mg this is the calories you might find at a fast food. but, recenlty researcher's found out that Subway had even more calories added to this which their calories show that it is highly above Mcdonlad's 2,149 milligrams in the sodium contents of meals in Subway. Which people thought in this case that subway was the healthiest-fast in the nation. We shouldn't be blind trust in the resturants' menu.

In order to stay away from fast food is in the eating control you can trigger your brain by  one of a great point  is to supply your brain with the same reward triggers, but from activities and foods that aid your fitness and weight-loss plans. The tempting that cause your body to want more fast food are the chemical release in the body that makes you feel great those feelings are done by dopamine and serotonin. The more you eat them the more highly you want them

more. what do think about fast food? I asked a few people and they said:
1.) It makes you fat! It is so Good but it is bad.
2.)It is not healthy.
3.) To me it is good. If put it this way it is bad for your health, because it sometimes it is not always good eating it even though we still end up eating it.

Heart disease is on the rise.High amounts of fat can be very difficult to digest, and much of the fat is actually stored in your body, rather than passing through. High calories, tons of fat and oodles of sodium is bad for your body. Increase in body blood pressure and slowly makes you think.

Carlos Perotte showcased his Steel Drum Concert

From July 22- August 8, 2013 Carlos Perotte put all his energy and effort to teach 60 plus students in his classes. Everyday was ineterested for the students as they had learnt new things. The different types of instrument they had where steel drum ,Garifuna drum, scrapper, Cuban box drum, and much more. In the three weeks classes each student had the experience to use the instruments and learnt the different types of instruments.

From ages 5-18 they the had the opportunity to learn the best instrument. On Agust 9, 2013 they held their concert. As the show was well presented and showcasing their unique moves to the music, the rythm of all presentation was excellent. Speaking to some students they say that they will try it next year. Each Student got their certificate of participation. Along with the students mayor Daniel got the opportunity to meet all the student. In surprise mayor Daniel Geurrero says ''it was and excellent view of what this students had done. They presented their show very well, as them being the first timer's.''

Carlos Perotte has been in Belize over ten years. He has been in the music industry for over 16 years. He learnt basically all the instrument.  Carlos Perrote introduced his new album "Omolewa Osain" with a live concert: Carlos Perrote and friends at the Bliss Center for the Performing on December 18, 2009 he introduced his new album "Omolewa Osain" is a Yoruba phrase meaning "Powerful Mind".Perotte explained that ''this was the first time he had come to San Pedro and was excited of seeing the student's learnt so fast in less than three weeks. ''It is all about the fun'' Perotte explained. Belize is a welcoming country of loving, cheerish, friendly people, Simply paradise lovely country. Belize is a nation that is known for it's hiden treasure waiting to be discovered and it's tourist destination Belize has. Belize only has two seasons per year Wet and Dry season. Wet season from June to Novemeber and dry season from december to May. English is the first language. As many may ask when they reach in Belize is ''What is Creole?'' Creole is a broken english. Creole descendants of Black African slaves brought to Belize and English and Scottish log cutters, who were known as the Baymen. The Belize Kriol language was then historically only spoken by them, but this ethnicity has become Belizean national identity, and as a result Kriol is now spoken by about 75% of Belizeans. Our second language is Spanish as well. Belize has different culture such as Creole, Mestizo, Garífuna, East Indian, Mennonite, Mopan Maya and Kekchi Maya.

If you want to Vacation in Belize, you can begin by looking at what kind of stuffs you want to do. Their is the second largest barrier reef in the world which stretches 8 to 16 miles long and you can explore Mayan ruins, rainforests, mangroves, turtle nesting sites and salt-water crocodile habitats. In the summer time is very high in tempreture so keep your sun screen with you and a spray of bug repelant. Snorkeling in Belize can be fun. Looking at some of snorkeling spots in Belize is Hole Chan Marine Reserve, Mexico Rocks, and Shark Ray Alley. Mainy fish can be seen at every dive. Some would be the parrot fish, sea fans, Grupor, just to name a few. Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe Islands, Glover's reef are visit by some Large boats. It is a shallow area,  that it's dept is only 9 feet deep and some patches of coral can be seen in the area. This are the six island that can be seen at the three atolls Sandbore Caye,  Northern Caye occupies two island,  Pelican Caye, Long Caye. Blue Hole is 1000 feet across and 400 feet deep. It is located in the middle of one of the atoll Lighthouse reef atoll. At 130 feet you can see huge stalgtites hanging off. Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve it is sixty square kilomiter's square mile. Visiting the site can be set by a local tour guides. It is only Accessable by sea.  Bacalar Chico is bordered  on the north by the Belize/Mexico border and southern boundary marked by the point from San Juan to Robles Point,  Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve (BCNP & MR) was established in 1996 and is managed by the Fisheries and Forest Departments.
Bcalar Chico is located on the northern tip of the reef over view the Bay of Chetumal and Mexico. The main concernce for this is its wildlife at Rocky Point, turtles nest between Robles and Rocky Point.



San Pedro Ambergris Caye, Belize

San Pedro ambergris Caye, Belize, - San Pedro in the back days was only a village set back to relax and catch fish. about 160 years ago, In the early 1800's to 1970's it was only mestizo desendance who were coming to the island because in the year 1848 the caste war in yucatan peninsual in mexico weremestizos hated the mexican. In this time, the first family that came to the island was the Antionio's family in the year 1848. Later on we got the Vasquez,Guerrero, Heredia, Gonzalez, Rosado, Nunez, Marin, Verde, Tolosa, Alamilla,Acosta, Cardenez,Aguilar, Gomez, Graniel, Kumul, Varela, Paz, Perez, Munoz, Ancona ect. Fishing in the island, was well taken care by the fishermen, who visited their lobster and fish everyday. Corn Fish was made locally in the island which is still made today. In those days there was no electricity nor refregerator, so the fish had to be preserved which is known as "Pescado Seco". People like San Pedro because of it's white Sandy Beach and the cool breeze smoothly blowing on your face.When the wind came in the island children played excitedly on the beach flying paper plane's which in those time's there was not much toys or not toys yet reach insland which they had to invent their own.
Now as the island had grown to a large town it is now famous for it's travelling lisit in Belize. San Pedro is now rank number #1for it's tourist destination. The island has lots to offer such as renting bicycle, renting golf carts,staying on hotels, restuarants and much more. Ambergris Caye is fool of wildlife bring people to it's full excitment. Tropical view's Ambergris has create's a magnificent of the island. Walking down the beach is beautiful site. Conch Shell is bought locally in different souviner's. A massage can also be done for you, to feel at home and relax your way in to a life time experience. Caye Caulker- This island made it's famousy to only a few people in the 17th-century British buccaneers used theisland to buildboats astop for water. The island strecthes 8 miles and 1 mile west. This Caye Caulker is in an area of a feeding site that migrates the route of fish, conch and lobster. It started of  when Indian War of the Castes in the Yucatan people sailed their way to this island. Dated from early times when the Spanish name the island "Cayo Hicaco".  Reffering Coco Plum which grows wildly on the island. Caye Caulker still remains as one of the fishing islandandboat builder's, but today as tourismistaking over itis now becoming more asa tourist destination. Small businesses are on a slowly lifesyle as the people in the island enjoy it more than others. This island has not changed for quit some time is it placesitself on a quiet vacationing. You can also enjoy your time on a sunset cruise in catamaran or a sailing boat. Caye Caulker and San Pedro can only be access by a water Taxi or either by plan.

St George's Caye

St George's Caye- was used for a short Military time that lasted from 3 to 10 September, 1798. It's famous name it was the final battle that occured on September 10. On the10of September it marks as a holiday public and bank. In the year's when the Spaniards came toBelize they tried to attempt to expel the sttlers in the island in the year 1716, 1724, 1733, 1747, 1751, and 1779. Today isan island one of a kind you want to visit. St. George's Caye is just few munitesto the reef and is a place you want to scuba dive. This island was fought for when hostiles were brought to end the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which allowed the Baymen rights between the Belize and Hondo rivers. Experiencing Scuba dive the work is done for you and you just have the fun. This island can only be access by boat.

Placencia- Placencia is a tourist destination a touch of lovely attraction beach and it's crystal blue water. Placencia stretches 16 miles of beach. Placencia gives a view of natural views such as birds, butterflies, green iguana's, and friendly people in the penninsula. Walking down the beach you'll see pleanty of great attraction view. Have lunch on seafront while having a great time.  Try the kayak for a tranquil attraction in the mangroves. Take a boat at the Monkey River to see the Howler Monkey. Do you want to sail away?  Enjoy a spectacular view of a sunset cruise in Placencia. you can visit the Barrief Reef by boat. by accessing the roadin placencia can  enjoy more  in the mainland and have spectacular time  Mayan Ruins of Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit, cave tours, or jungle trails through Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuar Jaguar Reserve. Mayan Site- Belize has many mayan ruins in the country. The  maya ruin which is visited today are Caracol, Xunantunich,Cahal Pech, El Pilar between Belize/Guatemala, La Milpa in Orange Walk District, Lamania, Colha Mayan Ruins, San Estevan, Cerros Mayan Ruin, Santa Rita, Caracol is located in Cayo district. This was the first name put to Carocal Uxwitza Three Water Hill. In the time of 2000BC-200CE Belize was occupied until the time ofthe 16th century when the Spaniards arrived. In the time of the Maya ruin, it said that their was 1 million Maya people during the Classic Maya Period than it is today. Belize Lies on the heart of Maya civilaization. Between 600 – 900 AD maya's were divided into different region kingdom and principalities. Maya Caves isa place hidden into treasure. Bodies had been discovered, portal to the Underworld, where many important deities lived. The underworld was called Shivalva (Shee-BALL-ba); the gods of death resided under caves.

Miss Belize is the winner of Miss Costa Maya

Every year in  San Pedro, The International Costa Maya is the largest event in the island. Everyone from around Belize comes and joins the fun on the island. As the different dance groups presented their locally and internationally dances, it is a show to enjoy and a show to be remebered. Costa Maya is celebrated each year from august 1st-4th. But the showcase is that everyone where wanting to see who where the eight delegates and who will win for the crown. This year in Costa Maya it was a spectacular event show that took place on August 1st, each contestant had to present their International dress. Surprisingly , their costume presented from their own country, was an amazing costume made by their creation. as the pageant went on, The Belize dance group had performed their pleasant show, that they rock the stage. Then the eight delegates came out to present their bikini suit. It was a color blue and white. A color that reperesent the sea, white that showed the white sandy beach. In the case of this presenters', they were well presented and showed the crowd what they had done. As, the show went on after the bikini showing, they presented their costume.  questions they had answred, they all answered well. with the some of them they had very good answer. looking at the costumes, all eight delegates showed their beautiful costumes on stage as the judges went on to choose who was the winner.  Miss Panama was the second runner up and Nicaragua was the first runner up.

Belize made it! Belize was the winner of 2013/2014. Few of a time which Belize made it to Costa Maya Destinee Arnlod is now repersenting Ms Belize. She rock the stage as she performed. Her entertainment made the crowd and judges thought she had the moves. She is friendly, loveable, and also a Belizean that will present Belize as International Miss Costa Maya.

Day two of the Costa Maya- The night started of with an immitator singer, singing his way to his different artists songs, such as Juan Gabriel, Elvis Presly, PSY, Shakira, ect. He has been sing for nine years and always made the crowd laugh. His show was very live and luaghable. Then, a group from Mexico showcase a special show just for the eight delegates La Riena De La Costa Maya. A group of Clash made its way on stage as they performed their excellent dances. Clash is a group that came from Honduras, and dance some different songs such as Mamboo, Salsa, Merengue, to name a few.
Reggae Band from Honduras made the crowd enjoyed a well rythm time. Dj Zog had the crowd after party show dance their way up the stage. few people went up to enjoy their night. They were competeing with each other to see who had the best moves.

Day three it was a performance you didn't wanted to miss. The show started of well as Los Yonics made their way on stage to perform their proffesional music. They rocked the stage throught the night as the crowd was very entertained with his music. Fans were very charmed with his music as some cried, luaghed, had moments. Los Yonics as being the first time here showcasing his talent music that made the crowd speechless. The crowd sang their night away when their favourite song came on.

Danny Michel Gives the Garifuna Collective's a travel tour

The Garifuna Collective has been one of Belize's nationwide known for their diver's unique music. Brukdown, Punta rock, Paranda, Maya marimba, Garifuna and Creole drumming;is the famous Belizean style music played in Belize.  42 year old Danny Michel feel in love with the garifuna collectives band, when he heard their music when he was vacationing in Belize about 15 year's ago. Danny Michel which he is a songwritter, has been touring in Canada, Ontario, proving that he could teach the group some music. Ivan Duran, who is known in
 Benque Viejo owner of Stonetree Records and producer of some excellent albums, including the work of the late, great Andy Palacio, the deeply rewarding “Paranda” featuring Paul Nabor and other Parranderos, and many others. Michel learned his way around with his lone guitar-slinger funky guitars and using turtle shell for defense. Today The Garifuna Collectives say that travelling abroad is very expensive. Danny Michel who is the head leader that gives the travelling tour gave seven weeks vacationin to the Garifuna Collectives to meet as a jaunt in Belize, when they received the call from Vancouver. They say that Michel sounded very unusaul, and It will feel out of his comfort zone. The challenge for them is to pay the expenses when travelling. With all the booking at a hotel a night which comes up to $1000, Transportation, Visas, the official Adressing of the governemt and the Fisheries Department. The Garifuna collectives say that Winnipeg and Vancouver’s folk festivals had taken act by the ambitour tour.  The reason why they had to go through all this hard immigration and  travelling was because some of the instrument were made by rattles made from turtle shell which they were taking to Canada.

what Michel loves about the Garifuna Collectives is that when they perform on stage the perform very unique. As they are known in Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Michel says that all shows he has seen were all fabulous. It's a very big work to put on stage. Because looking at it is very crazy that the idea came from a pinch of a salt. The latest album  Juno-nominated Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, which kinda beared back Michel a little from the project taken by road. Paul Nabor and the late Andy Palacio, the Garifuna Collective’s former singer and he was if can sing along with the Garifuna Collective's. As seeing the fans gathered to see the Garifuna Collective's they would like for the Winnipeg festivals shows were recorded and for them to listen to our performance Belizean music. Roan Garel first Blind person dived the Blue- Whole

Fourteen-year-old Rowan Garel, the visually impaired teenager who conquered Victoria Peak two years ago. He walked for miles for a Walk-a-ton fundraiser, now he was set to dive the Blue Hole on Tuesday July 14, 2013; however, plans to make the descent below the surface of the Caribbean Sea have changed due to the weather. It’s a minor setback given all the preparation that has gone into Rowan’s latest adventure.In this goal he wish to conquer is the first blind person to dive the blue hole. The reason he is doing this is for the porpuse of raising funds for the BVI summer summer camp. He says he was so excited anxious because it was his first time ever. he says that "the quiz was was taken 6 times as each section their is an exam. multiples times I had a heart attack multiple times beacuse of taking the quizzes. The fundraiser plan was to achieve $100,000. Rowan and his father went up to dive for the great experience. The reason it was free, because the services BCVI offers gave Rowan the opportunity to achieve his goal. Rowan says he is being strong in his mind explaining that no disability person should feel ashame of themselves to show who they really are inside them.

While diving under water he got to experience the sharks around him and got to feel the the turtle's shell. As enjoying the experience his father and sister remained on his side. As prayer's kept on him he felt very anxious and happy of what he has done. So, how well he did? he handled his own gear, bouyancy, propulsion and monitoring his air guage. Rowan explained that all he want was to dive underwater at the Blue Hole. Instructor Diver Says he hasn't seen somebody learn so quick than his usual students. Entering the Blue Hole it was time for them to go for an experiece. They used hand communication for any assistants. Looking at the Blue Hole View it is Like a tunnel when you dive in the Blue Hole. Joe Garel explained that he was very actrive in his youth Traveling the country, playing sports and doing activities stuff. It is a good expereince to be doing activities with your children,  as long as they enjoy it. Rowan was certified as open water with his PADI card. It took a lot of practice and preparation for this to go on  in the Blue Hole. Garel explain our family likes to be more on the adventurous type going out hiking, climbing mountains, swimming on the water, ect. Joe Garel explain that this shows Belize how much we have fund of raising to Belize Council for the Visually impaired. Rowan explain that it was a fun experience to feel the water.

The eight Contestants of the San Pedro International Costa Maya 2013

It was a pleasure to see the eight contestant joined in for dinner on July 25, 2013 for an enjoyable time at Fido's. As the night went through with no hurry, the eight contestant went up on stage to represent their own country. With flouent english and a well spoken time they each gave a speach of their own country. Meeting them all eight of them they say that Belize is the place to visit and they wish to come back as a beautiful country like Belize would take them to an adventrous time. Their time at fido's was a success to them as they enjoyed dancing, meeting people, and taking Picture with fans. The continuation of the eight delgates they went at Elvi's Kitcken for a Mayan Buffet that is held every Friday night. Now Let's look on how they did for the Noche Tropical At Ramaon's Village. It started very well as the eight contestants were very friendly as they greated the audience before starting the show. Each individual had the oppurtunity to meet them all and take photos with each contestants. The night started of as each one showed their dresses. Each dress had a meaning of why they had chose the dress. It looked very beautiful and creative to how they had put together their own dresses. As the night went on, a presenter from from Belize called "MARIPOSA" presented her fabulous dance. She started her dancing when she met one of her friend which is arab tought her how to do belli-dance and mariposa thought her how to do punta. Now they do exchanges as the arab is still teaching mariposa how to belli-dance. Second, the Casual was well presented showcasing their summer clothing and dressing clothing. It was a entertainable as the Mariposa call and audience to belli dance with her. Third, each contestant had to show their national dress of why they chose either from their country showing their dress and some where life experience from and friend. Honduras presented her Punta dress she explained that the reason she chose punta because she liked it she also explained that the dress is used when someone dies, Mexico her Mayan culture dress, Nicaragua presenting her Black and gold dress meaning "the sun", Belize reperesenting her Garifuna culture dress, Panama's dress had a creativity of a mayan style with design that reperesent a woman that should be respected, Guatemala reperesented her mayan top peice and her blue dress, El Salvador reperesented her national blue dress,  Costa Rica Represnted her Black and gold dress.

found Mayan Site 1,500 year old site in Guatemala

• A nearly 1,500-year-old Mayan stone monument, inscribed with a story of an ancient power struggle, has been unearthed in Guatemala.

The stone slab, which dates to A.D. 564, was found in a small tunnel that adjoins the tomb of an ancient queen beneath the Mayan temple at the site of El Per-Waka'.

The slab, almost 6 feet high and 3 feet wide, is carved with the image of a large man in its center, and is inscribed with Mayan hieroglyphics. The text on the monument describes a tumultuous seven-year period when two dynasties battled for rule of the ancient kingdom.

Prior to discovering this monument, no one knew the names of Mayan rulers during the sixth century.

"It really does advance our knowledge of the history of this royal family and dynasty," said study co-author David Friedel, an anthropologist at Washington University in St. Louis.

 

Ancient empireThe Mayan empire flourished in southern Mexico and parts of Guatemala for about six centuries, then mysteriously collapsed around A.D. 900. The Mayans built the massive city of Tikal, developed a hieroglyphic writing system and their own calendar, which infamously predicted the world would end in 2012.

The text on the monument describes a tumultuous seven-year period when two dynasties battled for rule of the ancient kingdom.

However, because they usually wrote on paper, rather than stone, "most of their writing is gone," Friedel told LiveScience.

Earlier this year, Friedel and his colleagues were excavating the Mayan tomb of a royal woman named Lady K'abel, when they uncovered the massive stone stele. Carved into the stele was the outline of a man cradling a sacred bundle in his arms, and there were inscriptions describing his feats on the sides of the monument.

Though the stone was worn away in the center, the inscriptions on the side remained readable.

 

Tumultuous periodThe team deciphered the inscriptions to reveal that a king known as King Wa'oom Uch'ab Tzi'kin, or He Who Stands Up the Offering of the Eagle, likely dedicated the stele to his father, King Chak Took Ich'aak, or Red Spark Claw, in 564. Both names were lost to history until now.

Because the Mayan calendar date was written on the slab, the team knows the exact day on which it was dedicated.

The inscription reveals that the death of the father, King Chak Took Ich'aak, in A.D. 556 ushered in a period of political turmoil as different groups grappled for supremacy. His son ultimately took the throne.

The stele also describes a royal woman, Lady Ikoom, who was a holy person and probably the mother of the king who dedicated the stele.

The team hypothesizes that the stele is so worn because it was exposed to elements aboveground for over a century before being brought into the tomb in A.D. 702.
